Whether you love Highgate Cemetery for its beautiful tranquillity, its interesting stories or its spotlight on Victorian history, Highgate Cemetery is a wonderful place to volunteer.
Volunteers are the lynchpin of the cemetery, providing tours and information, selling tickets and undertaking the gardening needed to keep the cemetery looking so lovely.
Contact Elle Hazlewood for more information on email@example.com.
We have a diverse group of volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and languages, united by their love of the cemetery. We organise regular social events to provide opportunities to make friends, share information, and emphasise how much our volunteers mean to us! People come to us for a variety of reasons – to gain work experience or grow existing skills, to give back to the community, to make friends, or simply to be able to spend more time in the cemetery.
We have spaces both weekdays and at weekends, and can be flexible to suit your availability. Unfortunately we are unable to accept volunteers under the age of 18.

Visitor Assistants are the face of Highgate Cemetery. They are responsible for welcoming visitors, selling tickets and sharing information. Our best visitor assistants always have a smile on their face and provide a warm welcome to anyone coming into the cemetery.

Our guides make Victorian history come alive for visitors of Highgate Cemetery. They are responsible for taking groups of up to 20 people around the West cemetery (the oldest part of Highgate Cemetery), sharing the stories of people buried here, the symbolism of their graves, and what we can learn about Victorian society by the way that they buried their dead. Our best guides are enthusiastic about the cemetery and sharing its history. (Full training provided.)

Highgate Cemetery is listed Grade 1 on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The cemetery boasts a wealth of flora and fauna, bird and animal life. Over its 170 years of existence, the burial site and its natural setting have become inseparable, and our gardening volunteers ensure that Highgate continues to look its best. Responsibilities include weeding, clearing of paths and graves and the creation of insect habitats. Our best gardeners share a love of the outdoors with a reasonable level of health and fitness.
