We’re looking for people to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for Highgate Cemetery with our visitors.
Our new course runs over four Saturday mornings in February from 10.30am until about 1pm.
The course covers the founding and development of the Cemetery as well as some of the most famous people buried here. You’ll also learn tour guiding skills and cash handling so that you can contribute to a great visitor experience.

We are looking for volunteers to enhance the visitor welcome and experience. Your role will be making visitors feel welcome and ensuring their visit is friendly, enjoyable and safe. You will develop a good knowledge of the Cemetery and its environs enabling visitors to receive accurate and relevant information to enhance their visit.
Reporting directly to the Visitor and Volunteer Co-ordinator
Volunteers generally volunteer one shift per weekend. These shift times are either 11am -2pm or 2pm -5pm. These shifts will also be available on public holidays.
Travel will be reimbursed up to a limit of £10 per return journey.
Highgate Cemetery is listed Grade 1 on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The cemetery boasts a wealth of flora and fauna, bird and animal life. Over its 170 years of existence, the burial site and its natural setting have become inseparable. We are looking for volunteers to continue the valuable work of up keeping the environment of the Western Cemetery. Supervised duties include
Enthusiasm for an outdoor environment and interest in the management of landscapes and habitats. Willingness to learn about our flora. Sensitivity to working around historical monuments and grave owners. The ability to work in a team with members from diverse backgrounds and of varying ages. Happy to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions. A reasonable level of health and fitness. Reliability and good time-keeping. Ability to follow safety procedures. All tools and implements are provided.
Our volunteers meet for working parties twice a month on alternate Saturdays and Sundays. However, there are also volunteering opportunities other days in the week. By registering you can be kept up to date with working party dates and opportunities. If you only have a couple of hours at a time to spare but would like to volunteer at the Cemetery, you might like to help with weeding and pruning in the the East Cemetery. We have daily opportunities available and would love to hear from you.
