Whether you love Highgate Cemetery for its beautiful tranquillity, its interesting stories or its spotlight on Victorian history, Highgate Cemetery is a wonderful place to volunteer.
Volunteers help us in delivering a wide variety of roles, providing tours and information, selling tickets and assisting with gardening.
By joining us as a volunteer, you can become an important part of our team, learn new skills, meet new people and play a vital role in helping to preserve Highgate Cemetery as a place of historic interest and beauty.
Our roles have no fixed time commitment. You choose your own shifts through our online management system which means balancing your volunteering around other commitments is easy.
We have spaces both weekdays and at weekends and can be flexible to suit your availability. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept volunteers under the age of 18 due to insurance reasons.

Our tour guides make Victorian history come alive for visitors of Highgate Cemetery. They are responsible for taking groups of up to 20 people around the West side (the older side of Highgate Cemetery), sharing the stories of people buried here, the symbolism of their graves, and what we can learn about Victorian society by the way that they buried their dead. Our guides are enthusiastic about the cemetery and sharing its history. (Full training provided.) Please note, all guides begin in the Visitor Assistant role to learn about the cemetery first and to begin their training.

Visitor Assistants are the friendly face of Highgate Cemetery. They are responsible for welcoming visitors, selling tickets and answering questions. Visitor Assistants know what great customer service looks like and always have a smile on their face, providing a warm welcome to anyone coming to the cemetery.

Our gardening volunteers ensure that Highgate continues to look its best. Responsibilities include weeding, clearing of paths and graves and the creation of insect habitats. Our gardeners are happy to be outside in all weathers, pitching in alongside our staff team.
Highgate Cemetery is listed Grade 1 on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The cemetery boasts a wealth of flora and fauna, bird and animal life. Over its 170 years of existence, the burial site and its natural setting have become inseparable.
